Tips to Safely Celebrate Martin Luther King Day

If you are celebrating the holiday with people outside your household, make sure you follow steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Here are some activities that are safer to do:

  • Drop off a meal to a neighbor.
  • Make hygiene kits for local homeless shelters.
  • Send care packages to deployed troops.
  • Plan an outdoor activity with people who live with you.
  • Attend a virtual speech or event, such as the annual religious ceremony.
  • Plan a celebration for the people you live with.
  • Reach out virtually to family, friends, and neighbors.
  • Watch a livestreamed celebration from your home.
  • Take care of yourself and do something you enjoy, such as reading a book or taking a walk.
  • Pick up a special meal from a local restaurant to share with your household or drop off to a neighbor.
  • Share CDC prevention messages with your friends and family.

Iowa:

  • Dubuque County: 987 active cases (5 more than yesterday)

DEATHS
Dubuque County:

  • No new deaths.
  • Total deaths related to COVID to date = 148 
  • Underlying Cause Deaths = 139, Contributing Factor Deaths = 9

Iowa:

  • 6 new deaths.
  • Total deaths related to COVID to date = 4,257
  • Underlying Cause Deaths = 3,894, Contributing Factor Deaths = 363

HOSPITALIZATIONS

  • Dubuque County Residents Hospitalized =  12 as of Jan. 11. (same as Jan. 10)
  • Iowans Currently Hospitalized = 513 (19 less than yesterday.) 

TESTING
Dubuque County:

  • 130 more individuals tested.
  • Total individuals tested to date = 49,557
  • Total tests to date = 130,992

Iowa:

  • 4,461 more individuals tested.
  • Total individuals tested to date = 1,414,804
  • Total tests to date = 3,343,507

PERCENT POSITIVE CASES
Dubuque County:

  • Past 14-day average = 10.8%
  • Past 7-day average = 6.9%

Iowa:

  • Past 14-day average = 13.2%
  • Past 7-day average = 9.4%

RECOVERIES 
Dubuque County:

  • New recoveries = 22 
  • Total number of recoveries = 10,102

Iowa:

  • New recoveries = 1,592 
  • Total number of recoveries = 263,834

LONG-TERM CARE FACILITY OUTBREAKS
Dubuque County:
 2 long-term care facility outbreaks (same as yesterday) with 64 current positive cases (same as yesterday), 4 new positive cases in the last 14 days, and 14 recoveries:

  • Ennoble Nursing & Rehabilitation, Dubuque (23 current positive cases, 3 in the last 14 days, and 0 recoveries)
  • Hawkeye Care Center, Asbury (41 current positive cases, 1 in the last 14 days, and 14 recoveries)

Iowa:
 81 long-term care facility outbreaks (4 less than yesterday) with 1,857 current positive cases (residents and staff), 874 recoveries (residents and staff), and 1,729 resident deaths from all Iowa LTC facilities to date.
