Radon gas is a naturally-occurring radioactive gas that can cause lung cancer. This gas is inert, colorless, and odorless. Outdoors, radon disappears quickly and generally does not result in health issues. However, radon can get trapped indoors, resulting in radon exposure inside homes, schools, and workplaces. Breathing in radon can significantly increase your risk of lung cancer.
Testing is the only way to determine radon levels indoors.
The Dubuque County Health Department offers at-home radon testing kits for $11. You can pick up a test kit at our office: 1225 Seippel Rd, Dubuque, IA 52002 Or call at 563-557-7396 with any additional questions or concerns.
If radon levels are high, contact a certified radon service professional to fix your home. This is usually fixed using an underground ventilation system or by increasing the rate of air changes in the building.
